Recently, people have been asking me about the importance of stretching as part of their workout regimes.  Stretching is often ignored, when it should be placed on the top of your list of workout routine.  Most people lead sedentary lifestyles.  That’s even true in NYC, where often your mode of transportation is your legs, because many of us spend the day at a desk, hunched over a computer.  This can cause muscle imbalances, which leads to a compromised posture. When your posture is compromised, movement in both daily life and in exercise can lead to injury, because your body isn’t in optimal alignment. Common postural distortions include: “rounding” and elevation of the shoulders , protrusion of the head, and the tightening of the hips, as the glutes (butt muscles) become weak. Proper flexibility training can help eliminate these distortions.  Today, we’re going to learn about the 3 different types of flexibility training. :-) Continue reading “Fitness By Natalie: Stretching” »

Well hello there after a long hiatus! Happy New Year! Yes, I know we are days away from February so I’m a little late to the “Happy New Year” party. I’ve been settling into my 2014 joyful, excited, elated, overwhelmed, nervous, stressed and the list of adjectives could go on. In June I will be getting married. It’s pretty much the biggest thing that’s happened in my life thus far so let’s let this pressure cooker begin! Continue reading “Happy New Year, Weddings, and Accountability!” »

FITNESS TIP:

The holidays are such a delicious time, aren’t they? The cookies, pies, egg-nog, coca, chocolates, candies…I love it. What I’m trying not to do this year is give myself permission to indulge in too much of these treats just because I’m keeping up with my workouts. I advise you to do the same. It’s easy to make yourself believe that just because you hit the treadmill for a half hour, you’ve earned the right to overindulge. I think it’s amazing if you’re able to keep up with your workouts during this time of year when it’s tough to find enough hours in the day. As temperatures drop and fall is settling in, my workouts change just like my wardrobe. Fall is without a doubt my most favorite season. I love the crisp air, the smell of the leaves as they drop from the trees, and when it comes to my exercise routine, I feel like a superstar when I don’t have to contend with the heat and humidity the summer brings. Besides the standby outdoor workouts–walking, running, biking–there’s a lot you can do to spice up your routine and enjoy the Autumn colors and crisp air, i.e. the following workout I’ve created just for you! Wellness Defined

Lately, I’ve been thinking about what makes me happy in my life as far as wellness goes. Wellness is defined as “the quality of state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.” I also believe it to be the place where you land once you have balanced both health and fitness for yourself. Balance is the key to being happy and I’ve been thinking about what that balance is for me. I’ve been trying to define my own wellness while letting go of some of the “shoulds” in my life and adding more of the “wants.” Sometimes, the two go hand in hand…If you want something, there are things you should do but you have to ask yourself, is it worth it for your own personal wellness? I’ve been waiting a little while to write this blog post, because I needed the post-INSANITY feelings to set in. I wracked my body for over 60 days and I needed to see how I would feel after pushing myself 6 days a week (most weeks) and trying a new workout that I never thought I would do. So here it is, my thoughts on the ever so popular Insanity workout…. Continue reading “Insanity” »

Don’t Let Weather Get In Your Way

Today I’m sitting in my apartment due to what, at this point, seems like nothing. There is talk of “Noreaster Nemo” heading our way, but all I see when I look out my window is a bit of rain. All of my clients canceled their sessions today because of kids at home due to school closures, early drives out of town to make, or forgotten gym clothes due to over preparation for what is forecasted to be a crazy weather day. Well, hello there!

It has been a crazy winter in New York City. One day it’s snowing 19 inches and the next, it’s 62 degrees outside. This January and February I’ve been varying my workouts based on the lovely daily weather mood swings. For the past 2 winters, I’ve had a Half-Marathon to train for. Continue reading “Mix ‘er up!” »

I might be a little biased, but I think that hiring a personal trainer is something everyone should do at least (at the very least) one time in their lives. I’m speaking from experience because before I became a personal trainer, I hired one myself and it was eye-opening. Here are my top 5 signs that you could benefit from a personal trainer.
