5 Things You Should Always Buy Green

The great thing about living in this day and age is the amount of products that now come in a “green” format. Cars, clothes, and cleaning products are all excellent examples of things you should buy green. But what are some of the other popular choices? The following is a list of five things that you should always buy green.

1. Paint
Indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air, and according to the EPA, is considered one of the top five hazards to human health. Paints and finishes are among the leading causes.

Paints and finishes release low level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. The source of these toxins is a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which, until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint. Look for low or, ideally no, VOC paint.

2. Paper
Most types of paper can be recycled. Newspapers have been recycled profitably for decades, and recycling of other paper is growing. From a recycling point of view, the more “post-consumer” paper the better. Soybean-based inks are gaining favor as a renewable alternative to harsh and toxic petrochemical inks.

3. Light bulbs
If every American home replaced just one light with a light that’s earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.

4. Appliances
Properly recycling electric products permanently removes them from the electric grid, conserves resources, and makes room for more energy-efficient models.

5. Fruits and Vegetables
Organic produce has more nutrients than its conventional counterparts, probably because the soil is left in better condition after repeated plantings; and healthier because you avoid ingesting any harmful pesticide residues left on conventional produce.

The USDA Organic label tells you that fruits and veggies weren’t raised using manmade chemical pesticides, fossil fuel- or sewage-based fertilizers or genetically modified seeds.
