The most popular sport in the world just got more popular. The citizens of San Pedro Copan, Honduras have just been given a brand new soccer field to enjoy thanks to an amazing contribution from a company called Little Feet.
Since 2006, Little Feet has operated on a one-for-one model, donating a soccer ball to a disadvantaged child for each one sold. The “La Cancha de Futbol” project demonstrates its vision to go beyond one-time equipment donation, to a more broad-based approach of improving the quality of life for children in impoverished areas.
The project has transformed the original field from a small, dusty area into a 91-meter by 61-meter full-sized grass pitch. By excavating and moving roughly 4,000 cubic meters of rock and dirt, the engineering and construction team graded the site to allow the heavy rains that wash through the area to properly drain. “The team put in a lot of effort in the design and coordination of the construction,” says Lucas Corsbie, a southern-California professional engineer and the lead engineer on the project. “The opportunity to apply my design experience to such a great cause was very exciting. The true reward is seeing the kids of Las Capucas enjoying their favorite sport on a field that they have always dreamed of playing on.”
