These days Airlines are charging for everything. We may be closing in on a time when we need a token to get into the bathroom. Isn’t it enough that we are now charged up to $45 for carry-on bags. The carriers that still offer ‘meals’ have the gaul to charge for them. Their marketing strategy, the promise of a more appetizing meal than the traditional airline fare. But at least we still have some nice flight attendants: Hungry on a recent flight I had the option to dig into my kids college fund to purchase a can of chips, really a tub of chips – big enough to feed a pack of wolves but a flight attendant gave me a cup with a stack of chips, on the house. Most flights call for a Ginger Ale to quell my nausea from huffing the cabin air. A 2009 Zagat survey said only 19% of respondents would pay for snacks on a domestic flight. Not surprising when your options are a box of food equal to the cost of a meal at Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Believe me, I get it: Good food is hard to make in an airplane because of cabin pressure and humidity. Peter Wilander of Delta Airlines said they decided not to offer an almond-peanut butter and jelly sandwich because they “could not get the consistency of the bread right”. Hey, I get it. Use the mess and smell as a defense. Though I wouldn’t blame that on a box of food or a bag of pretzels. I am a big fan of Virgin Airlines so I give them a break that they didn’t go with chocolate bars because of the mess. But their planes are actually clean, comfortable and they care about service. One Carrier is said to be contemplating serving tuna fish because they have discovered magic lemons. The chatter now is that the food we didn’t use to have to pay for is at least going to taste better. Then again, who really wants to eat while soaking in marinating germs.
