It seems like it happens every single year no matter how much you prepare for it. Sooner or later, you’re going to be out in the sun just a tad too long and then next thing you know, you’ve got yourself a sunburn. Want to learn some natural remedies to help ease the sting of a sunburn, or reduce the swelling of annoying bug bite? Here is a list of some helpful tips.

  1. Take a bath. An oatmeal bath, that is. “Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce the discomfort that accompanies sunburn,” says Debra Jaliman, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology. “It inhibits the release of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that dilate blood vessels and increase redness and pain.” In addition to sunburn, oatmeal can soothe other skin issues, such as bug bites, rashes, and even chickenpox. 2. BEAT THE MOSQUITOS. Head straight for the kitchen next time you get a pesky bug bite. Grab a box of baking soda and mix it with water to form a powerful astringent that will reduce the itchiness of the bite.  Baking soda’s alkaline nature helps neutralize your skin’s pH balance, which eases inflammation and pain.
  3. Honey of a cure! Next time you or someone you know cuts or scrapes themself, try using honey on the wound. The sweet stuff is a natural antimicrobial. Ongoing research at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff has even found that manuka honey can interfere with the growth of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a type of bacteria highly resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Honey also acts as a cleanser you can use on your face to combat breakouts.
